Bleach

A chemical used to attack stains in white fabrics

Boiler

A pressure vessel used to produce and store steam

Breakwash

A cold first wash used to remove protein

Classify

To sort into the same type of work

Condensate

Liquid which is cooled down and turned back into water

Detergent

Chemical that helps water remove soil

Dip

Depth of water in a washing machine

Dryfold

Work that is tumble dried to get a better finish

Emulsion

A liquid mixture in which a fatty or oily substance is suspended in water

Finishing

Ironing, pressing, tumble drying and folding is called 'finishing'

Flatwork

Ironing of sheets and tablecloths is called flatwork

Foul

A load containing blood or bloody wastes

Galling

A yellowing of white work due to insufficient rinsing

Greying

Describes work that has an even layer of soil over it making it look grey in colour caused by redeposition itn the wash

Ironer

A machine used for drying work (garments) in flat form

A chemical shorthand to describe a measure of acidity or alkalinity

Rewash

Returning work to the machine for another wash cycle

A step in the wash process

Surfactants
